Vesuvius Afterglow

Vesuvius Afterglow

A late evening scene looking towards Vesuvius from a rooftop in the modern city of Pompei.  Although it is 8 miles away Vesuvius dominates the skyline even at dusk.  The local station of the Circumvesuviana railway can be seen at the bottom of the picture near the centre.  The Circumvesuviana is a narrow-gauge electric railway covering the east of the Naples metropolitan area.  As well as being an important commercial artery it provides services to the tourist destinations of Pompeii and Herculaneum.  When in Pompei I feel compelled to take photographs with Vesuvius in the background, just as at home I always capture images with Glastonbury Tor somewhere in the picture.
