The Holiest Erthe in Englande

A view west along the length of the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey.  Rebuilt after the fire of 1184 the abbey was the longest in Europe when it was destroyed in the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539.  The abbey buildings were ransacked, and all valuables sold or removed to the King’s treasury.  Abbot Richard Whiting was hanged on Glastonbury Tor.
