View from the Piazzle Anfiteatro, Pompeii

Beneath the umbrella pines in the Piazzale Anfiteatro looking towards Vesuvius.  The 20,000-seater amphitheatre is to the right and the Large Palaestra is to the left behind the high wall with battlements.  The Large Palaestra consists of a large open-air square, approximately 140 x 140m, surrounded by porticoes.  It was built in the Augustan period, at the beginning of the 1st century AD, and was intended for the physical and intellectual training of young citizens.
